Breaking Fast at Iftar with Maki & Ramen

As the blessed month of Ramadan approaches, beginning on the evening of 17th February 2026, Muslims across the UK are preparing for a month of spiritual reflection, prayer and fasting.

At Maki & Ramen, we’re honoured to welcome you to break your fast with us at any of our locations, offering delicious Halal menu options that honour this practice.

Understanding the Sacred Practice of Fasting

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, commemorates the revelation of the Qur’an to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Fasting during Ramadan, known as Sawm, is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and represents a profound spiritual practice observed by Muslims worldwide.

The fast begins each day at Fajr (dawn) with Sehri, the pre-dawn meal, and continues until Maghrib (sunset), when the fast is broken with Iftar. This daily practice serves multiple purposes: it cleanses the body, reminds us of the suffering of those less fortunate, and brings us closer to Allah through self-discipline and devotion.

Fasting during Ramadan isn’t simply about abstaining from food and drink – it’s a holistic practice that includes refraining from negative behaviours, increasing acts of charity, and dedicating more time to prayer and reflection.

Iftar Times for Ramadan 2026

This year, Ramadan falls during the late winter and early spring months, which means fasting hours will be considerably shorter than during the long summer days. At the beginning of Ramadan in mid-February, Iftar in London will occur around 5:18pm, gradually extending to approximately 6:20pm by the time Ramadan concludes on 18th March 2026.

These shorter fasting hours – averaging between 11 and 13 hours per day – offer a welcome reprieve compared to the challenging summer fasts that can extend beyond 18 hours. The crisp February and March weather, with temperatures hovering between 4°C and 9°C, creates a different atmosphere for the blessed month, allowing families and communities to gather comfortably for Iftar as the sun sets over London.

The Tradition of Iftar

Breaking the fast at sunset is a moment of deep gratitude and community. Following the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), many Muslims traditionally break their fast with dates and water before performing the Maghrib prayer. This is followed by the main Iftar meal – a time to nourish the body after a day of spiritual focus and to share food with family, friends, and those in need.

Iftar is more than just a meal; it’s a celebration of faith, gratitude, and togetherness. Whether enjoyed at home, in the mosque, or at a restaurant, the act of breaking fast together strengthens community bonds and reminds us of the blessings we often take for granted.
